I see a lot of the same questions come up when people shop for leather, so
here's a quick guide covering the main styles, what to check for quality,
and how to look after it. Hope it helps, and I'd like to hear what others
look for too.
STYLES (MEN'S AND WOMEN'S)
- Biker: the classic bold, edgy cut. Works with dark denim, boots and a
plain tee. For women, a moto-style biker adds edge to dresses, skirts
and jeans.
- Cafe racer: clean front, minimal lines, slim fit. The easiest to wear
with smart-casual outfits.
- Trucker: relaxed and casual, easy to layer over tees and knits.
- Suede: softer and more textured, great for fall. It needs a bit more
care around rain and stains than smooth leather.
- Varsity: sporty and casual, a good everyday option.
If you only want one jacket, a dark brown or black cafe racer or biker
usually stays in style the longest.
HOW TO CHECK QUALITY BEFORE YOU BUY
1. Ask what grade the leather is (full-grain, top-grain or corrected).
"Genuine leather" on its own doesn't tell you much.
2. Look at close-up photos. Real leather has natural variation in the
surface, not a perfectly uniform pattern.
3. Check the stitching, especially around the underarms and pockets, where
weaker jackets fail first.
4. Test zips and hardware. They should run smoothly.
5. Look at the lining. It should be stitched cleanly and not bunch up.
6. Be careful with very low prices attached to "full-grain" claims.
FIT
- The shoulder seam should sit at your shoulder point.
- Sleeves should reach your wrist bone.
- You should be able to move your arms without the jacket pulling.
- Snug is fine, because leather loosens a little with wear.
CARE
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Don't soak the leather.
- Condition once or twice a year, more often if it's exposed to sun or heat.
- Let wet leather dry naturally, never with a hairdryer.
- Store on a wide hanger in a cool, dry place, not in plastic.
BEYOND JACKETS
If you're building a leather wardrobe, the same checks apply to bags,
wallets and belts: ask about the leather grade, look at the stitching and
check the hardware.
Disclosure: I work with Oxbowe. We offer men's and women's leather jackets
(biker, cafe racer, trucker, suede and varsity), plus hoodies and leather
goods like bags, wallets and belts, with express shipping and easy returns.
Happy to answer questions about leather types, sizing or care, even if
you're shopping elsewhere.
What do you check first when you buy leather? Any mistakes you'd warn others about?
