How should business frameworks be used in a paper?
#1
A business paper analyzes a company, market, or decision using recognized frameworks and ends with a recommendation supported by evidence. It is closer to a report for a manager than a traditional essay, so clarity and practical value matter as much as the analysis.

The main parts, as far as I can tell:
  • SWOT and PESTLE - Context, not conclusions
  • Five Forces - Industry structure
  • The 4Ps - Marketing analysis
  • Financial Ratios - Evidence for the claim
  • The Recommendation - Costed, with risks

Frameworks help organise the analysis, but they are not the analysis itself. Filling in a SWOT table is only the starting point. Markers want to see what those factors mean for the organisation and the decision.

Each framework answers a different question. PESTLE looks at the external environment. Porter's Five Forces looks at competition within an industry. SWOT combines internal and external factors. The 4Ps focus on marketing strategy. Using a framework that does not fit the question makes the paper feel unfocused.

Ratios such as profit margin, return on assets, the current ratio and debt to equity can back up claims about performance and risk. Explain what each figure means and how it compares with earlier years or with competitors. A ratio on its own says very little until it is put in context.

A strong paper moves logically from analysis to recommendation. Each recommendation should answer a problem or opportunity identified earlier, and include practical details such as cost, timeline, who is responsible and what could go wrong.

Annual reports, industry data, government statistics and peer reviewed journals give stronger evidence than general opinion articles. Business writing also values concise language and clear headings, and many instructors expect an executive summary at the start. Writing that summary last usually makes it sharper.

The most common mistake is running several frameworks without connecting any of them to a final decision. Every framework should feed the answer.

The takeaway:
  • Frameworks are the method. The decision is the answer.
  • CollegeEssay.org sets out business paper types and the frameworks expected more fully than I have summarised here.
  • Anyone dealt with this before? Interested to hear what worked and what did not.
