What information does a writer need before starting your paper?
#1
When a student asks for help with a paper, the quality of the result depends mostly on the brief. Clear requirements in, usable draft out.

The pieces that seem to matter:
  • The Question - Copied, not paraphrased
  • The Rubric - It shows the weighting
  • The Length - And what counts toward it
  • The Style - APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard
  • The Readings - This is what makes it yours

Whether the help comes from a tutor, an editor, a study group or a writing service, the person helping only knows what you tell them. A vague request like write about climate policy can turn into a perfectly good paper that still misses exactly what your instructor wanted to see.

The question should be copied word for word, because paraphrasing it often drops the instruction verb or a limit like a date range. The rubric matters because it shows how the grade is split between argument, evidence, structure and presentation, which is often not obvious from the question alone. For length, say whether the reference list, headings and appendices count toward the word limit.

The style is easy to forget and costly to fix later, so name it upfront along with any edition your course uses. The readings are what tie the paper to your course. Lecture slides, assigned articles and notes on key terms show how your particular instructor thinks, and feedback from an earlier assignment helps too.

A couple of other details make a difference. The education level matters, because a first year seminar and a final year module expect very different depth. So does the number and type of sources, especially if peer reviewed articles are required. Sending everything at the start, with time left for one round of questions, usually works far better than a perfect brief sent the night before.

The takeaway:
  • Most students send three of these. The fourth is what shows.
  • CollegeEssay.org sets out what information a paper brief needs more fully than I have summarised here.
  • Anyone want to add to this? Keen to hear what people found mattered most.
