Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone here can relate. My senior cat (she’s 13) has recently started acting really withdrawn. She used to love curling up next to me on the couch every evening, meowing for her favorite treats, and sleeping on my pillow. But now? She spends most of her time under the bed, doesn’t come when I call, and barely responds when I pet her.
It’s subtle, but noticeable—and honestly, it’s breaking my heart a bit.
She’s still eating, drinking, and using the litter box normally, so nothing seems urgent health-wise, but this sudden emotional distance feels strange. I know aging animals sometimes slow down or want more quiet, but it’s hard not to wonder if something’s wrong emotionally or even cognitively.
Has anyone else experienced this with an older pet. Is it possible this is just her needing more rest and alone time? Or could this be an early sign of something more serious, like feline dementia or discomfort that she’s hiding?
I’m keeping an eye on her and making a vet appointment soon just to be safe. But emotionally, I’m also trying to figure out how to support her through this. Should I engage more? Give her space? Create new low-stress bonding routines?
Would love to hear from other folks with senior pets—what helped you reconnect when they started to “pull away”? Any small changes that made a difference?
Thanks so much for reading. Aging is hard to watch, but I just want to make this phase of her life peaceful and loved.
