What are college papers actually graded on?
#1
An academic paper is a structured argument: a claim, the evidence behind it, and the reasoning that connects the two. Length and format follow the course.

What it actually involves:

  • The Question - Answered exactly as set
  • The Evidence - Sources, not confidence
  • The Structure - One idea per paragraph
  • The Citations - One style, start to finish
  • The Clarity - Plain beats impressive

A lot of lost marks have nothing to do with writing quality. They come from answering a nearby question instead of the one that was set. If the task asks you to evaluate a policy and you describe it in detail, you have written a decent summary that misses the brief. Underline the instruction verb, the topic and any limits, then check your thesis against all three before drafting.

On evidence, markers notice quickly when sources are there for decoration. Each quote, statistic or study should support a specific claim in that paragraph, and the paragraph should explain why it supports it. A smaller number of well used sources usually beats a long reference list that is barely mentioned in the text. Peer reviewed articles and course readings tend to carry far more weight than general websites.

For structure, open each paragraph with a topic sentence that links back to the thesis. If you can read only the first sentence of every paragraph and still follow the argument, the structure is working. If you cannot, the paper probably needs reorganising rather than more polishing.

Citations and clarity are the easiest marks to protect. Pick the style your course requires and use it the same way from the first page to the reference list. Plain sentences are almost always safer, because long words make a tired marker work harder to find your point.

The takeaway:
  • Everything else is polish. These four are the grade.
  • Most of this came from CollegeEssay.org, which goes through how academic papers are structured and assessed in detail.
  • Would be interested to hear from anyone who has done this. Did any of it match your experience?
