What Features Should a Modern Business Directory Script Include in 2026?
#1
Over the past few months, I’ve been experimenting with a few business directory tools, and I’m noticing the same issue everywhere: most directory scripts still feel outdated.

They carry old UI patterns, too many generic fields, and don’t match how users actually search for businesses today.
So I wanted to ask the community here at Ziuma.

If you were building a modern, flexible business directory platform in 2026, what features would you say are essential?
A few points to start the discussion:
  • ·         Should advanced filters be built category-wise (restaurants, services, shops, freelancers, healthcare, etc.) instead of one generic filter set?
  • ·         How important is location intelligence today — like nearby search, area-based listings, and map-based navigation?
  • ·         Do you think an advanced directory script should have built-in review and rating moderation tools to avoid spam?
  • ·         Is it better to keep listing forms simple or allow very detailed fields for each category?
  • ·         What about revenue features — membership plans, promoted listings, lead forms, claim-your-business option, etc.?
  • ·         Should a modern directory also support mobile-first design and dark mode right from the core?
  • ·         In your opinion, what makes a directory script truly useful for local businesses?

I’d love to hear how other founders, developers, and directory owners see this.
Which features feel like “must-haves” and which ones are just nice extras?
