I'm hoping to pick the collective brain of the forum. I work for a mid-sized city government, and like many of you probably experience, we're constantly battling with legacy IT systems. You know the drill: clunky interfaces, processes that require 10 clicks for something that should take 2, and zero integration between departments.
Our leadership is finally acknowledging that we need to modernize and are starting to look at new public sector IT solutions. The mandate from the top is to improve citizen services and internal efficiency, which is great, but I'm hitting a wall.
Every vendor we talk to seems to offer the same robotic sales pitch: "Our AI-driven, cloud-native, hyper-scalable platform will revolutionize your workflow." It all sounds impressive in a PowerPoint, but it feels disconnected from the real-world problems we're trying to solve. Our staff isn't a Fortune 500 sales team; they're public servants who need tools that actually make their jobs easier, not more complicated.
I'm not just looking for a list of software. I'm looking for partners who understand the unique challenges we face tight budgets, strict compliance needs, and serving a hugely diverse population.
So, my question is: Has anyone here gone through a significant tech modernization project recently? Were you able to find public sector IT solutions that felt like they were designed for actual humans? I'd love to hear about:
Vendors who get it: Companies that took the time to understand your specific workflows.
Implementation: Was it a nightmare, or surprisingly smooth?
Training & Adoption: Did your team actually use the new system, or did they revert to old habits?
Any war stories, recommendations, or even "avoid this company" warnings would be hugely appreciated. We really want to get this right.
