Hello everyone! Can we please have more conversations about oily aging skin? Because everything out there is either aimed at teenagers with oily skin or older people with dry skin. Those of us dealing with excess oil AND fine lines AND pigmentation feel completely ignored by the skincare world.
In my 20s my oily skin was annoying but manageable. I used a strong cleanser, skipped moisturizer because I thought I didn't need it and used mattifying products everywhere. Fast forward to my mid 30s and suddenly that routine was making things worse my skin was oily in some areas, flaky in others and aging faster than I expected.
Turns out over-stripping oily skin actually makes it produce more oil as a defence mechanism. And skipping moisturizer was causing dehydration underneath all that oil. It took me a dermat visit to understand this properly.
Finding the right oily skin care products that balance oil control with proper hydration and anti aging benefits is genuinely hard but so worth it when you find the right fit. This collection addresses exactly that oily skin care products really helpful if you're navigating this specific combination.
Now I use a gel cleanser, lightweight niacinamide serum, oil-free moisturizer and SPF. My skin is so much more balanced and the congestion I used to deal with constantly has reduced a lot.
Here's what my routine looks like now and what has genuinely made a difference. In the morning I use a gentle gel cleanser that removes overnight buildup without stripping. Then a lightweight niacinamide serum which has been the single biggest game changer for me — it controls oil production, minimises the appearance of pores, and helps with the pigmentation I was dealing with. Then a light oil-free moisturizer because yes, oily skin absolutely needs moisturizer. And then SPF every single day without fail because sun damage is one of the biggest contributors to premature aging and it makes pigmentation so much worse.
At night I double cleanse on days I've worn SPF, follow up with a low percentage retinol twice a week to address the fine lines and texture, and use a slightly richer but still non-comedogenic moisturizer to support my skin barrier while I sleep.
My skin is honestly so much more balanced now than it has ever been. The congestion I used to deal with constantly has reduced significantly, my pores look smaller, the random dry patches are gone and the oiliness is manageable rather than out of control. It took about three months of consistency to really see the difference but it was absolutely worth it.
The biggest lesson I learned through all of this is that oily skin needs balance, not punishment. You're not trying to eliminate oil — you're trying to regulate it. And once your skin feels supported and not under attack, it actually starts behaving so much better.
Would love to hear from others here who are dealing with the same combination. What has been your biggest skincare lesson? Did you also go through a phase of over-stripping your skin before figuring things out? And has anyone found specific ingredients or products that work really well for oily but aging skin? Let's actually have this conversation because it really doesn't happen enough!
Anyone else here dealing with oily skin that's also showing signs of aging? What's been your biggest skincare lesson?
