I was reorganizing one of our older network rooms this week and it honestly surprised me how many links are still running on GLC-SX-MMD. Some of these connections have been in place for a very long time, and nobody really thinks about them anymore because they just work. No alerts, no complaints, no mystery packet loss. They just sit there quietly doing their job.
Most of these runs are short multimode links between access switches and distribution gear. Nothing fancy, but still critical. Every time we plan an upgrade, someone brings up the idea of replacing all the old optics. Then we look at the live links and realize there is no real reason to touch them. The GLC-SX-MMD modules come up instantly after reboots and survive power cycles without any drama.
One thing I have noticed is how forgiving they are. Some of these fibers go through patch panels that have definitely seen better days. A few connectors are older than I would like to admit. Yet the links stay stable and error free. When something does go wrong, it almost always ends up being a bad jumper or a dirty connector, not the optic itself.
At the same time, part of me wonders if we are being lazy by not modernizing. Newer hardware, higher speeds, cleaner designs all sound great, but there is something comforting about gear that has proven itself over time. We have a few spare GLC-SX-MMD units that must be close to a decade old, and they still light up the moment they are plugged in.
So I am curious how others handle this. Do you actively replace GLC-SX-MMD as part of refresh projects, or do you leave them in place as long as they keep behaving? Has anyone actually had issues with them that made you rethink keeping them around?
