Azerbaijan Tour Package from Lahore: Four Hours Away, Almost Nobody Goes
#1
I asked around before booking. Ten people. Nine had never even thought about Azerbaijan. One asked if it was a real country.
It is. And it's four hours from Lahore. Four. Less than a drive to Islamabad, if the motorway is clear.
My cousin went last year and came back talking about it for weeks. So I started looking into an azerbaijan tour package from lahore. Turns out it's cheaper than Turkey, less crowded than Dubai, and almost nobody from here has been.
The old city is called Icherisheher. Walled. Narrow lanes, stone houses, people actually living there. Not a museum. Kids playing football in the streets. Old men outside tea shops playing backgammon. There's a tower called the Maiden Tower and nobody knows what it was built for.
Then you step outside the walls and there's three tall towers lit up like flames. Glass and LED screens right next to a walled city that's been there for centuries. That contrast is the whole trip.
Most packages include Baku plus a day trip to Gobustan. Ancient rock carvings and mud volcanoes. Pools of grey mud bubbling up slowly. Sounds boring, looks strange, worth seeing once.
The food is mild, not spicy like ours. Plov is their main rice dish. Dushbara is tiny dumplings in soup. Bread baked fresh and sold on the street. And the fruit. Figs, pomegranates, apricots. Cheap at the markets. My cousin ate figs for breakfast every day and still talks about it.
Best time to go is April to June or September to October. Summer is hot. Winter is cold and windy because of the sea breeze.
Carry cash. Cards work in big hotels but small shops, markets, and taxis want manat. Visa is easy for Pakistani passport holders. Rules change, so confirm with whoever you book through.
One thing nobody mentions. There's no nightlife. No clubs, no beach parties. It's a walking city. Old buildings, tea shops, markets, long evenings in courtyards. If you want a party holiday, this isn't it. If you want something calm and different, it is.
My cousin said the thing he remembers most is sitting in the old city at night. Lanes lit up, quiet, old men playing backgammon outside a tea shop. Something you can't photograph properly. Just a feeling.
That's what I'm going for, honestly. Not the towers. Not the photos for Instagram. Just a few days somewhere that doesn't look like anywhere I've been.
