What changed between APA 6 and APA 7?
#1
A psychology paper reports or reviews research on behavior and mental processes, following APA 7 structure and citation throughout. Whether it is a lab report, a literature review or a research proposal, the same core rules apply.

Here is how it breaks down:
  • No Running Head - For student papers
  • Up to 20 Authors - Listed in references
  • Singular They - Officially endorsed
  • Five Heading Levels - Defined, not invented
  • Bias-free Language - Person-first by default

APA style is more than formatting. It reflects how psychology values clear reporting, consistent structure and transparent sourcing.

One of the biggest changes in APA 7 is a separate format for student papers. The running head is gone, and the title page includes the course name, instructor and due date instead. Check whether your instructor wants the student or professional version before you start.

Reference lists changed too. You can now list up to twenty authors before using an ellipsis, publisher locations are no longer needed for books, and DOIs are written as standard web links. Older guides still miss these, so it is worth checking the edition of any guide you rely on.

APA 7 encourages bias free language, including the singular they and careful description of age, disability, gender, ethnicity and other characteristics. Person first language is the usual starting point, although identity first language may be preferred in some communities.

The manual defines five heading levels, each with its own formatting. Using them consistently helps readers find their way around longer papers. Most student papers only need the first two or three levels.

Author and date in text. Smith, 2024. Every time. Every paraphrase and quotation needs that citation, and direct quotes also need a page number.

The most common errors are mixing APA 6 and APA 7 rules, missing DOIs and inconsistent capitalisation in reference titles. A dedicated citation check before submitting catches most of them early.

The takeaway:
  • APA is not pedantry. It is part of the mark.
  • Most of this came from CollegeEssay.org, which goes through psychology paper structure and APA 7 formatting in detail.
  • Has anyone here been through this recently? Curious what actually made the difference.
