How to sync progress between web and mobile?
#1
Our players hate that their progress on the mobile app doesn't sync with the desktop site. Is there a technical fix for this omnichannel data fragmentation?

When players use the same account across a mobile app and a desktop website, they naturally expect their progress, preferences, achievements, and other account data to remain consistent across every device. If progress is saved separately on each platform, the experience can quickly become frustrating because users may lose track of where they left off or have to repeat the same actions. This type of omnichannel data fragmentation is usually a sign that the different platforms are not relying on a sufficiently unified data architecture.
A practical technical approach is to establish a centralized backend that acts as the single source of truth for player data. Instead of allowing the mobile application and desktop website to maintain completely separate progress records, both platforms can authenticate users through the same account system and communicate with the same APIs. Player progress can then be stored centrally and retrieved whenever the user signs in from another device. This makes the experience much more consistent and also simplifies future development.
Real-time or near-real-time synchronization can further improve the system. Whenever a player completes an action that changes their progress, the application can send the updated information to the backend rather than relying only on local storage. The server can validate the change, update the central record, and make the latest state available to other connected devices. Proper conflict-resolution rules are also important, particularly when a user switches devices before an earlier update has finished syncing.
Local caching can still be useful for improving performance and supporting temporary offline access, but cached information should not become a competing source of truth. Developers should define clear rules for when local data is refreshed, when it is uploaded, and how conflicting versions are handled. Version numbers, timestamps, event logs, or other synchronization mechanisms can help determine which updates should be accepted.
It is also worth monitoring synchronization failures through server-side logs and analytics. Tracking failed requests, delayed updates, authentication problems, and conflicting records can reveal where fragmentation is occurring. With a shared identity system, centralized APIs, reliable synchronization logic, and careful conflict handling, companies can create a much smoother omnichannel experience. Players should be able to move from a phone to a desktop without feeling that they are entering two completely separate versions of the same service.
I started playing Drift Boss for fun, and now I'm obsessed with improving my score.
