Title:
Switched to a stake out pole this season, worth it for shallow water fishing
Post:
Been kayak fishing shallow flats and grass beds a lot this year, and I finally made the switch from my old folding anchor to a stake out pole. Wanted to share my experience since I know a lot of people here are still on the fence about whether it is worth the switch.
For context, most of my fishing happens in water that is 6 feet deep or less, mostly grass beds, mud flats, and the occasional sandy patch near shore. My old anchor worked fine in theory, but in practice it dragged more often than not, took a while to grab, and every time I tossed it, I would drift a few feet before it caught. On calm days that was annoying. On days when I was sight fishing and trying to stay quiet, it was a dealbreaker. More than once I watched a fish I was tracking spook the second that anchor hit the water.
This season I picked up a 7 foot fiberglass anchor pole that breaks down into three pieces. That last part mattered a lot to me because I was worried a longer single piece pole would be a pain to store, especially since my kayak already has a fish finder, rod holders, and a crate taking up space. The breakdown design solved that. It fits in the kayak without me having to rearrange my whole setup.
The actual difference on the water has been noticeable. I push the pole straight down, get a solid hold almost instantly, and there is no splash or swing like I used to get with the anchor. When fish move, which they do constantly on the flats, I can pull the pole, reposition, and stake back in within seconds. That kind of quick repositioning was basically impossible with a traditional anchor and rope setup.
I do want to be clear that the pole is not a total replacement for my anchor. Once I am in anything deeper than about 6 feet, or if there is current, the pole loses its advantage fast and the anchor takes over. So now I just carry both and use whichever fits the water I am in that day.
If anyone is trying to decide whether this is worth adding to their setup, I found a write up that goes into more detail on when a pole makes sense versus a traditional anchor, plus what to actually look for if you are shopping for one (material, length, breakdown design, that kind of thing). Sharing it here in case it helps. Check this link
Curious if anyone else here has made the switch, or if you are still running a traditional anchor for everything. Would be interested to hear how others are handling shallow water anchoring, especially anyone fishing similar bottom types.
