When Does It Make Sense to Hire a Software Development Company?
#1
I’ve noticed businesses often start with an internal team, but as the product grows, they run into challenges around development capacity, hiring specialised developers, maintaining older systems, or simply getting new features released on time.

At that point, outsourcing development can make sense, but I’m curious where people draw the line.

Is it mainly about:
  • Not having the right technical expertise internally?
  • Difficulty hiring developers quickly?
  • Reducing development costs?
  • Needing to modernise an existing application?
  • Handling a large project without expanding the permanent team?

And for those who have worked with a software development services company, what mattered most when choosing one: technical expertise, communication, previous projects, development methodology, or something else?

Would be interested to hear what worked (and what didn't) for others.

I also think there’s another side that gets overlooked: how do you know whether outsourcing is actually working?

For example, do you look at:

  1. Release frequency and delivery timelines?
  2. Code quality and maintainability?
  3. Bug rates after releases?
  4. How well the external team understands the product?
  5. Documentation and knowledge transfer?
  6. Communication between internal and external developers?
  7. Whether the team can work independently without constant supervision?

There’s also the question of ownership. Outsourcing development doesn’t necessarily mean handing over all technical decisions to an external team. In many cases, the internal team still needs to own the product roadmap, architecture decisions, security requirements, and long-term technical direction.

I’d be interested to hear how others have handled that balance.

Did you use outsourcing mainly as an extension of your existing engineering team, or did the external team take ownership of an entire project?

And looking back, what would you do differently if you were choosing a development partner again?
