What should I check before hiring an offshore development team?
#1
India can be a practical choice for long-term software development, but I think the quality of the team and the working process matter much more than the location itself.

If you plan to hire Indian dedicated developers, I would look at several things before making a decision. First, check whether the developers have experience with projects similar to yours. A team may have strong technical skills, but experience with your particular technology, industry, or type of application can make a big difference.

Communication is another important factor. Time-zone differences are usually manageable when there are agreed working hours, regular meetings, and a clear process for handling questions and updates. Before starting a long-term engagement, it can be useful to have a few discussions with the actual developers who will work on the project rather than speaking only with a sales or account team.

I would also pay attention to code ownership, security, access permissions, documentation, and how the team handles backups and source-code repositories. These things may not seem important at the beginning, but they become very important when a project runs for several months or years.

For pricing, I wouldn't choose a team simply because they offer the lowest rate. A cheaper team can become expensive if communication is poor, deadlines are missed, or the code requires substantial rework. Look at the overall value, technical capability, reliability, and expected long-term involvement.

Finally, having clear requirements, milestones, responsibilities, and payment terms in writing can prevent many misunderstandings. If possible, starting with a smaller project or initial phase can also give you a better idea of how the team works before making a larger commitment.

Overall, an offshore dedicated team can work very well, but careful evaluation and clear communication are probably more important than where the developers are located.
