Full Version: What exactly is a home hospital bed, and do I really need one for my dad?

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping some of you who have been through this can help. My dad (68) is coming home next week after hip surgery. During discharge, the nurse said, “You should arrange a home hospital bed.” I nodded like I understood, but honestly I don’t know where to start.

What I understand so far
From what I’ve read, a home hospital bed is a bed made for use at home. The head and foot sections can be raised or lowered, and some models also adjust in height. This helps a person sit up, lie flat, and get in and out of bed more safely. Some have side rails. Some are manual (hand crank), some are semi-electric, and some are fully electric.

What I can’t figure out is how a home hospital bed is different from a regular adjustable bed, and whether it’s really necessary.

Our situation
  • Small bedroom, about 10 x 11 feet, with a fairly narrow doorway
  • Recovery will probably take 8 to 12 weeks
  • My mom will be the main caregiver, and she has back problems herself
  • Our budget is limited
What I’ve already tried
  • Googled “home hospital bed” for hours. Most results are ads or long spec sheets.
  • Called a local pharmacy. They don’t stock them.
  • I looked at a few supplier websites, including ACG Medical Supply, just to see what types exist and learn terms like “full electric” and “bariatric.” I haven’t bought anything, I’m only trying to understand the basics.
  • Asked the hospital social worker. She said to check with insurance but didn’t explain how.
My questions
  1. Is a home hospital bed really needed, or can a regular bed with a wedge pillow work for a few weeks?
  2. Rent or buy? Since this is short-term recovery, renting seems smarter, but I don’t know what the monthly costs look like.
  3. Does insurance or Medicare cover a home hospital bed? Do we need a doctor’s order first?
  4. Manual, semi-electric, or full electric? Which one is best for daily use?
  5. Do we need a special mattress for pressure relief, or does the standard one work?
  6. How hard are delivery and setup? Will the bed fit through a narrow door?
  7. Is there anything you wish you had known before getting a home hospital bed for a family member?
If you’ve used one, I’d love to hear what worked, what didn’t, and any mistakes to avoid. Even small tips, like where to place the bed in the room or what to ask the supplier, would help a lot.

Thanks so much in advance. This community has been a lifesaver for me on other topics, and I’m hoping someone here has walked this path before.
