The process of transferring the SharePoint data may appear simple at the beginning however, the problem can get more complicated as it goes along when you have to deal with several sites, huge libraries of documents and permission settings. In my opinion, the right way of handling the situation is to prepare for the migration in advance.

First of all, examine the current SharePoint environment and see what has to be transferred there. It may be documents, folders, lists, libraries, metadata, version history and permission settings. Also, check the target environment to see if it is ready to receive the information.

If there is plenty of data that needs to be transferred, the use of specialized migration tools may prove to be more convenient. There is a professional tool called Kernel Migrator for SharePoint which provides bulk migration and selective migration possibilities. This tool can prove to be useful, especially when it is necessary to migrate certain SharePoint data. As it provides filter which one can use while transferring SharePoint sites to SharePoint Online as a new or existing site. This software can also perform incremental migration to transfer only new or modified data and track migration progress in real time for easy monitoring.

In addition to this, I would advise conducting a test migration and after checking whether the documents are available, their folder structure remains the same and all the necessary metadata and permissions have been transferred. This will allow determining the problems, if there are any, which then should be resolved prior to migrating the remaining data.

It is also essential to choose an appropriate maintenance window since the users often work with SharePoint sites. Notifying the employees of the forthcoming migration in advance and having the necessary data backed up may turn out to be quite helpful. Overall, a little preparation can save considerable time during a SharePoint migration.
