Full Version: AI Cloud Services: What to Look For Before Choosing a Provider

Hi everyone,
I work with Utho, and I’m sharing some practical notes on AI cloud services because many teams get stuck choosing between hyperscalers, local providers, and on-prem GPUs. I’d also like to hear what has worked for you.

What are AI cloud services?

AI cloud services give you on-demand infrastructure for AI work, usually GPU or high-performance compute, plus storage, networking, and tools to train, fine-tune, and deploy models. You pay for what you use instead of buying hardware up front.

Common use cases
  • Training and fine-tuning machine learning models
  • Running inference for chatbots, search, and recommendation features
  • Computer vision and document processing
  • Data analytics and experimentation for startups and enterprise teams
What to check before choosing an AI cloud provider

  1. GPU availability and types: Confirm which GPUs are offered and whether you can get them when you need them.
  2. Pricing clarity: Look at hourly vs. monthly pricing, and ask about data transfer (egress) and storage charges.
  3. Data location and compliance: If your data must stay in a certain country, check where it is stored and processed.
  4. Network and storage performance: Slow storage can waste expensive GPU time.
  5. Scaling: Check how quickly you can scale up for training and back down afterward.
  6. Support: For AI workloads, fast access to engineers matters more than generic ticket queues.
  7. Lock-in risk: Prefer standard tools (Kubernetes, common ML frameworks) so you can move later.
Common mistakes
  • Choosing on GPU price alone and ignoring egress and storage costs
  • Over-provisioning GPUs that sit idle
  • Not testing with a small workload before committing
  • Ignoring data residency until late in the project

Disclosure: I’m associated with Utho, a cloud provider that offers AI cloud services (details at https://utho.com/ai-cloud). I’m happy to answer general questions here, whether or not they relate to our platform.

Question for the community: What are you running on AI cloud infrastructure right now, and what has been your biggest challenge, cost, GPU availability, or data compliance?
