Full Version: How Can I Verify PST Email Headers Without Opening Outlook?

Email headers can contain useful technical information that is not always visible in the normal message view. When reviewing an old PST archive, administrators may need to check details such as Message-ID, Return-Path, MIME version, Content-Type, sender information, or routing-related fields. This can be important during email investigations, migration planning, compliance reviews, or troubleshooting.

The difficulty is that accessing these details usually requires opening the mailbox through an email client. If Outlook is unavailable or the original profile no longer exists, reviewing the underlying email information can become more complicated.

A dedicated PST viewer can make this type of inspection easier. SysInfo PST File Viewer can open PST files without requiring Microsoft Outlook and provides access to email body, attachments, notes, headers, MIME information, and raw HTML. It supports both ANSI and Unicode PST files and can load single or multiple PST/OST files.

The header preview can be useful when an administrator needs to verify whether an archived message contains the expected metadata. Instead of relying only on the visible sender and subject, the user can inspect technical fields such as Message-ID, Return-Path, MIME Version, Content-Type, and other header information.

Search functionality can also narrow down the review. SysInfo PST Viewer provides filters for From, To, Subject, date range, and messages containing attachments. This means a large archive does not necessarily have to be reviewed message by message.

Another useful aspect is that the viewer works in a read-only manner by default, according to the product information, so the original PST is not intended to be modified during normal viewing. The software also operates locally rather than requiring PST data to be uploaded to a cloud service.

For IT teams, investigators, or records managers, reviewing the technical details of archived emails before exporting or migrating them can provide a clearer understanding of what the PST actually contains. It is particularly useful when the original Outlook environment is no longer available.
