Has anyone here handled a Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration where hundreds of user accounts had to be moved in stages? We have different departments using Gmail, Drive, and Google Chat, and moving everyone at the same time seems difficult to monitor.

The main challenge is account mapping. The usernames in Google Workspace don’t always match the Microsoft 365 accounts, and some departments may need their data consolidated into fewer destination accounts. I’m also concerned about maintaining Gmail labels, attachments, contacts, calendars, and the existing Drive structure during the move.

For a large environment, I’m wondering whether it makes more sense to migrate Google Workspace to Office 365 department by department. A small pilot could be completed first, followed by the remaining users after checking mailbox content, Drive files, and account mapping. This would also make it easier to identify failed or skipped items before the next batch starts.

CSV-based mapping looks useful for this type of migration because manually entering every source and destination account could become time-consuming. The product information I reviewed also mentions one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many mapping, which could help when an organization is restructuring accounts.

While comparing migration options, I came across the SysInfo Google Workspace Backup Tool. Its listed capabilities include direct migration of Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat data to Microsoft 365, along with CSV mapping, Domain Wide Delegation, duplicate handling, date filters, resume migration, and detailed reports.

The reporting part is especially important for a staged migration. After each batch, I’d want to see which items were completed, skipped, or failed before moving to the next department.

For anyone who has had to migrate from Google Workspace to Office 365, how did you divide the users? Did you migrate by department, mailbox size, business function, or some other criteria? Also, did you keep the same mapping rules for every batch or customize them for individual departments?
