I've been researching CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) options for precision inspection work and wanted to get some input from the community.
For anyone unfamiliar, a CMM is used to measure the physical dimensions of a part with high accuracy, commonly used in automotive, aerospace, and general manufacturing for quality control and dimensional checking of components. It works by using a probe that touches or scans the surface of a part and records precise coordinate data points, which are then compared against the original CAD design to check for deviations, tolerances, and overall part conformity.
There are a few different types of CMMs out there — bridge type, gantry type, horizontal arm, and portable arm CMMs — and each one suits different part sizes and shop floor layouts. Bridge type CMMs seem to be the most common for general-purpose inspection, while portable arms are handy for larger or oddly-shaped components that can't be brought to a fixed machine easily.
Things I'm considering before making a decision:

If anyone here uses a CMM regularly in their own facility, I'd love to know which one you'd recommend and why. Also curious about your experience with manual versus CNC-controlled machines, and any tips for someone buying one for the first time in terms of budget planning, installation requirements, floor space considerations, environmental controls needed, and operator training needs. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and real-world experiences with these machines and vendors!

Things I'm considering before making a decision:
- Accuracy and repeatability of measurements
- Manual vs. CNC-controlled operation
- Ease of use and software support
- After-sales service and calibration
- Overall build quality and durability
- Cost of ownership including maintenance and training
