I’m working on a new ecommerce website and I’m trying to build a proper SEO strategy from the beginning. The website has multiple product pages, category pages, and informational content, but I’m not getting much organic traffic yet. I have already worked on some basic on-page SEO, such as page titles, meta descriptions, headings, product descriptions, and image alt text. However, I’m still trying to understand what I should prioritize next.
One thing I’m particularly interested in is technical SEO. For an ecommerce website with a large number of pages, how important are things like site architecture, crawlability, XML sitemaps, canonical URLs, duplicate product pages, pagination, redirects, and page speed? I want to make sure search engines can properly crawl and understand the important pages without wasting crawl resources on unnecessary URLs.
I’m also looking at internal linking. Currently, most of the product pages are linked through category pages, but I’m wondering if there is a better way to connect related products, categories, and blog content. Would creating topic clusters and linking informational blog posts to relevant commercial pages help improve rankings and make the website easier to navigate?
Another area I’m unsure about is keyword research. Should an ecommerce website focus mainly on product-related keywords with buying intent, or should it also target informational long-tail keywords? For example, would it be better to create content around questions, comparisons, buying guides, and product-related problems, then naturally connect those articles to the relevant product pages?
I’m also considering structured data. Product schema, review schema, breadcrumb schema, and organization information seem useful, but I’m not sure which types are most important for ecommerce websites. Are there any common mistakes with structured data that could cause problems in search results?
Backlinks are another topic I’m trying to understand. Since the website is relatively new, should I start building backlinks immediately, or should I first focus on technical SEO, content, internal linking, and improving the existing pages? If link building is recommended, what are some safe and realistic ways for a small ecommerce business to earn relevant backlinks without relying on spammy directories or low-quality websites?
Mobile SEO and website speed are also concerns because a large percentage of ecommerce visitors use mobile devices. Besides compressing images and reducing unnecessary scripts, what other technical improvements usually have the biggest impact on ecommerce performance?
I would appreciate advice from anyone who has worked on ecommerce SEO, especially for newer websites. If you were starting SEO for an ecommerce website from scratch today, what would your first few priorities be? Are there any SEO mistakes that beginners commonly make with product pages, category pages, internal linking, or technical optimization?
I’m mainly looking for practical advice and a clear order of priorities rather than a list of generic SEO tips. I’d like to understand which tasks are worth doing first and which ones can wait until the website has more traffic and authority.
