Full Version: Is My Custom AI Development Company in USA Just Reselling a Tool?

Okay so something's bugging me and I can't quite shake it.
We're two weeks into a project with a custom AI development company and every time I ask a technical question the answers feel... rehearsed? Like they're reading off a script instead of actually explaining our specific setup. Started wondering if what we're paying for is genuinely custom work or if they've just got some existing framework they slap a new logo on for every client.

This is our first time working with a custom AI development company in USA so I have no clue what red flags actually look like versus normal vendor behavior. Might be paranoid, might not be.

Trying to Figure Out What Custom Actually Means
Been asking around and reading through a bunch of old threads about custom AI development services and here's what people say actually separates real custom work from a rebranded product:
  • Ask to see the actual architecture diagram for your specific project, not a generic one they use in every sales deck, real custom work looks different every time
  • If a custom AI development company can't explain why they chose a particular approach for your data specifically, versus just defaulting to whatever they always use, that's a warning sign
  • Genuine custom AI development services should involve visible iteration, meaning your feedback actually changes something in the build, not just cosmetic tweaks
  • A real custom AI development company in USA will have different tech stacks across different client projects because no two problems are identical, if everything looks the same that's suspicious
  • Ask directly how much of the codebase is reused versus written specifically for you, a legit team will give you an honest percentage instead of dodging
  • Watch how they respond when you ask something outside their comfort zone, real custom builders adapt, resellers usually stall or redirect the conversation

Still Not Sure Where I Stand
Planning to ask for that architecture breakdown next call and see what happens. If they can't produce something specific to us, I think that answers the question honestly. Anyone been in this spot before with a custom AI development company? How'd you figure out if it was real custom work or just a repackaged product with your name on it?
