Full Version: How Do You Pick the Right Kayak Paddle Length? (Height + Kayak Width Guide)

I've been paddling for a couple of seasons now, and it wasn't until recently that I realized how much of a difference paddle length actually makes. For the longest time I just used whatever paddle came bundled with my kayak, assuming length was mostly about height. Turns out that's only part of the story, and honestly the part most people get wrong.

After dealing with sore shoulders and an awkward, hunched-over stroke on longer trips, I started digging into why my paddle felt off. It came down to three things working together: my height, the width of my kayak, and my paddling style. I hadn't even considered kayak width as a factor, but it makes total sense once you think about it. Wider fishing and recreational kayaks sit you higher off the water, so you need a longer paddle to reach the water at a comfortable angle without straining. Narrower touring kayaks sit lower, so a shorter paddle works better there.

Paddling style plays a role too. If you paddle high-angle (a steeper, more aggressive stroke), a shorter paddle tends to feel more efficient. If you're more relaxed and low-angle, which is common for fishing and casual paddling, a slightly longer paddle gives you better leverage without forcing your form.

I found a really thorough guide that breaks all of this down, including a sizing chart based on kayak width, common mistakes people make when choosing a paddle (like sizing based on kayak length instead of width), and when an adjustable-length paddle might be worth it if you switch between kayaks often or share gear with someone of a different height.

If you've been dealing with shoulder fatigue, awkward reach, or just want to make sure you are not leaving performance on the table, it's worth a read before your next gear purchase. Here's the resource I used: kayak paddle length guide.

Curious if anyone else here has switched paddle lengths and noticed a real difference in comfort or stroke efficiency. What length are you all running, and on what width kayak?
