Full Version: renting a car

I’m considering renting a car for an upcoming trip instead of depending entirely on taxis or public transport. I think having a vehicle available could make it easier to plan the day, especially if I want to visit several places or change my plans along the way. At the same time, I don’t have much experience with car rentals, so I’d rather understand the process before making a reservation.
There seem to be quite a few rental services available, but the conditions can vary considerably. Some offer short-term rentals, while others seem more focused on longer bookings. I’m mainly interested in something for a few days, although having the option to extend the rental would be useful if my plans change.
Another thing I’m trying to figure out is which type of vehicle makes the most sense. I don’t necessarily need anything large or expensive. A compact car would probably be enough for ordinary trips, but I’d consider a larger vehicle if it made sense for longer drives or traveling with several people. It would be helpful to hear how others choose between economy cars, larger family vehicles, and SUVs.
I’m also curious about the booking process. Is it usually better to reserve a car online before the trip, or can you find reasonable options after arriving? I’d prefer to know the basic terms in advance, including the total price, insurance, mileage allowance, fuel policy, and what is required when collecting the vehicle.
Payment conditions are another point I’d like to understand. Some companies require a credit card or security deposit, while others may have different arrangements. I’d like to avoid unexpected charges, so clear information about deposits, additional fees, cancellation rules, and possible charges for changing the booking would be important to me.
If anyone has rented a car recently, I’d be interested in hearing about the process. I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest option, but I would like something reasonably priced with understandable conditions and a decent selection of vehicles. Recommendations based on actual experience would be especially useful.
