Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask for some honest advice from people who have already hired an SEO agency.
I run a small business, and over the last few months I've been talking to different SEO providers. Almost all of them offer a fixed monthly package. The problem is that every agency promises great results, but they all want the monthly fee whether rankings or traffic improve or not. As a business owner, that's the part I'm struggling with.
A few years ago I hired an agency on a monthly retainer. They sent reports every month, talked about technical improvements, content updates, and backlinks, but I never really understood if my business was getting enough value for what I was paying. Traffic changed a little, but leads stayed almost the same. When I asked how long it would take to see real growth, the answer was always "SEO takes time." I understand that SEO is a long-term strategy, but after several months I still wasn't sure whether I should continue or stop.
Now I'm planning to invest in SEO again, but this time I'm trying to choose the right pricing model before signing any contract.
Recently I came across the idea of performance based SEO. From what I understand, the agency gets rewarded based on agreed results instead of simply charging the same monthly fee regardless of the outcome. On paper, that sounds more aligned with what a business owner wants because both sides seem to have a shared goal. At the same time, I'm not sure if there are any downsides that I'm missing.
For those of you who have actually worked with agencies, what has your experience been like? Did you go with a fixed monthly plan or performance based SEO? Which one gave you better results in the long run?
I'm not looking for agency recommendations. I just want to understand how experienced business owners evaluate these pricing models before making a decision. Are there any questions I should ask before signing an agreement? Are there any warning signs that tell you an agency is more focused on collecting monthly payments than delivering measurable business growth?
I'd really appreciate hearing real experiences, both good and bad. I think a lot of business owners face the same decision, and learning from others could save me from making another expensive mistake. Thanks in advance!
