Full Version: Merged contact files and ended up with repeated records. Any suggestions?

I recently merged multiple contact files (VCF backups) from different sources like my phone, email export, and old backup folders. At first I thought everything would combine neatly into one clean address book, but after the merge I noticed a serious issue—my entire contact list is now full of repeated records.

Some contacts are duplicated exactly with the same name and phone number, while others are partially duplicated with slight differences. For example, one entry might have just a phone number, while another entry for the same person has an email address, an alternate number, or a different formatting of the same name. Because of this, it’s not easy to just delete duplicates blindly, since I might lose important information that exists only in one version of the contact.

Now my phonebook and VCF file both look messy and unorganized. When I try to search for a contact, I see multiple entries for the same person, which creates confusion and increases the chances of calling or saving the wrong number. It also makes syncing the contacts with other devices or apps more complicated, because the duplicates keep getting carried over.

I tried checking manually, but the file is too large and has hundreds (maybe thousands) of entries. Going one by one is not practical at all, and there’s always a risk of deleting something important accidentally. Some contacts are business-related, some are personal, and some contain multiple numbers under slightly different names, so it becomes even harder to decide what to keep and what to remove.

The main problem is not just duplicates, but how to safely clean them without losing any valuable data. I want a solution where duplicate contacts can be identified smartly and merged properly instead of simply deleting entries. Ideally, it should keep the best or combined version of each contact so that no phone number, email, or detail is lost during cleanup.

Right now, my contact list feels completely cluttered after merging these files, and I’m looking for a reliable and easy way to fix it without doing everything manually or risking data loss.
