The TOEFL syllabus and IELTS reading practice share common themes like education, science, technology, and the environment, making it possible to blend materials for effective preparation. In my lessons, I integrate resources such as the TOEFL listening practice test and IELTS speaking mock test to build students' versatility in tackling diverse passages and question types across both exams. The TOEFL listening practice test hones skills in understanding academic lectures and conversations, focusing on extracting key details and grasping main ideas under time pressure. This aligns with IELTS reading, which often includes similar topics in its passages, requiring students to identify main points, infer meanings, and handle varied question formats like multiple-choice and matching. Meanwhile, the IELTS speaking mock test fosters natural fluency and coherence, encouraging students to articulate thoughts on topics like education or the environment with confidence. By combining these materials, I help students adapt to the distinct demands of each test—TOEFL’s academic rigor and IELTS’s conversational and analytical focus. This approach builds flexibility, as students learn to switch between structured responses for TOEFL listening practice tests and fluid, conversational answers for IELTS speaking mock tests. It also prepares them for overlapping themes, ensuring they can handle complex vocabulary and ideas across both formats. My strategy is to tailor lessons to students’ goals, using these shared themes to create a cohesive preparation plan that maximizes their performance in either or both exams.
