Hey everyone,
I’ve been teaching voice for a little while now and recently started working with a few total beginners — like, never-sung-in-front-of-anyone-before kind of beginners. They’re eager, which is awesome, but also really nervous. So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about which songs for beginner singers work best when you’re trying to build confidence and start developing basic vocal technique at the same time.
I usually start with easy melodies and a limited range (like one octave or less), something that doesn’t jump around too much or sit too high or low. But I’m finding that some of the songs I used to rely on either feel a bit outdated now, or just don’t click with younger students.
For example, “Stand By Me” is still great for pitch and breath support — super steady and not too rangy. But I’ve also had some luck with more modern stuff like “Someone You Loved” (if taken a bit slower). Anything with a strong melody and clear phrasing seems to help.
Do you usually let the student pick their material from day one, or guide them toward specific songs to build technique first? I’ve noticed some students want to jump into their favorite pop hits right away, even if the song’s totally out of range or rhythmically tricky. Trying to find that balance between “fun” and “foundational.”
Also, do you ever adjust keys to help with comfort early on, or let them struggle a little to learn control?
Would love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for you all when choosing songs for beginner singers. Whether it’s kids, teens, or adults, any tips or song ideas are welcome!
Thanks in advance!
