been going through my payslips more carefully recently and realised i don’t actually understand how national insurance is being calculated
i always assumed it worked in a similar way to income tax where it’s just a fixed percentage based on your salary, but after comparing a few different months the numbers don’t seem as consistent as i expected
for example, even when my pay hasn’t really changed much, the NI deduction sometimes looks slightly different, which made me wonder if there are other factors involved that i’m not fully aware of. i’ve read a bit about thresholds and different bands, but it’s still confusing when trying to connect that with what actually shows up on the payslip
i tried to look into it more seriously and even checked my NI contributions based on my income to understand how the deductions are being worked out, and that gave me a rough idea, but it still feels like i’m missing part of the logic behind it
another thing that confused me is how things like overtime, bonuses, or small variations in monthly earnings might affect the final amount. i’m guessing those changes push parts of income into different thresholds, but it’s not very clear when you’re just looking at the final number
also not sure how consistent it should be month to month. like, if your salary is mostly stable, should the NI deduction stay roughly the same, or is it normal for it to fluctuate slightly depending on how the pay is structured in that specific period?
i feel like this is one of those things people don’t really question and just accept, but i’d actually like to understand it properly instead of just seeing money deducted without knowing exactly why
has anyone found a simple way to make sense of how NI is calculated without going too deep into technical details?
