Why is the TOEFL Writing section so tough for some students?
#1
The TOEFL syllabus for Writing is a critical part of the exam and is designed to evaluate how well test takers can express themselves in written academic English.

It includes two tasks: the Integrated Writing task and the Independent Writing task, both of which must be completed under strict time limits.

In the Integrated task, students are required to read a passage, listen to a related lecture, and then write a well-organized response that accurately summarizes the key points from both sources, highlighting how they relate or contrast. This task measures the ability to synthesize and compare information effectively.

The Independent task, on the other hand, requires students to write an essay expressing their opinion or argument on a given topic, supported by examples and explanations. Mastering both tasks is essential for achieving a strong writing score.

As a TOEFL tutor, I help students understand the full scope of the TOEFL syllabus for Writing by walking them through the structure, scoring rubrics, and types of questions they can expect.

I emphasize outlining before writing, as it helps in organizing ideas clearly and staying focused. Through consistent, timed practice, detailed feedback, and strategies for coherence, vocabulary, and grammar, I guide students to improve both their writing technique and time management. This approach ensures they’re fully prepared to handle the demands of the TOEFL Writing section with skill and confidence on test day.
