I’ve been handling communications and marketing for a mid-sized crypto project, and I’m starting to seriously question the role of crypto press releases in 2025. We’ve published several press releases over the last year—well-written, timely, and tied to product launches or funding announcements. But here’s the problem: they’re just not getting picked up by real journalists anymore.
Every time we run a campaign through one of these crypto press release distribution platforms, they promise visibility on 100+ “top sites.” But when you dig into the actual placements, most of them are obscure aggregators or SEO-focused blogs that no one in the community actually reads. No referral traffic, no reposts, and worst of all—no organic media coverage. We haven’t gotten a single actual journalist or editor reaching out after a press release in months.
It feels like the press release model in crypto is stuck in 2018. It’s pay-to-play, full of recycled content, and dominated by scammy distribution services that inflate their reach metrics. Many of them present generic coverage screenshots as if they represent real editorial attention. But anyone who’s been around knows those are just syndicated reposts with no audience behind them.
So I’m wondering: is it the content format that’s outdated? Or are PRs now just SEO assets—meant more for Google indexing and investor optics than actual exposure? Is it even realistic to expect media pickup unless you’ve already built relationships or added paid visibility on top?
I’d love to hear what’s actually working for others. Are you shifting budget to influencer outreach, X (Twitter) spaces, or community marketing instead? Or are there still PR strategies out there that deliver real ROI, not just vanity metrics?
