Which is Better for Stargazing — Ladakh or Kausani?
#1
Wink
Lately I’ve been seriously looking into stargazing in Ladakh because almost everyone says the night skies there are on another level, especially around Hanle, Pangong, and Nubra Valley. The combination of high altitude, dry weather, and almost zero light pollution apparently makes it one of the best astronomy destinations in India.

At the same time, I also discovered this Kausani stargazing observatory setup in Uttarakhand which honestly seems much more beginner-friendly and easier to reach compared to planning a full Ladakh trip.

One thing I’m still confused about is whether guided observatory sessions are actually worth paying for or if independent camping gives a better experience overall. Some people say guided sessions help a lot because experts explain constellations, planets, deep-sky objects, and telescope usage properly, especially for beginners.

I’m also curious how much photography gear actually matters. I currently only have a mid-range DSLR and a basic tripod, so I’m not sure whether that’s enough for Milky Way shots or meteor shower photography in places like Ladakh or Kausani.
Another thing I wanted to ask is about the timing. A lot of experienced travelers suggest planning these trips around new moon phases because moonlight can completely reduce Milky Way visibility. I didn’t realize before how important moon phases are for astronomy travel planning.

I’m also considering whether August–September would be better because of meteor showers and clearer skies after monsoon season in some regions. But then again, Ladakh accessibility and weather conditions seem very different from Uttarakhand, so I’m trying to understand which destination is more practical for a first dedicated stargazing trip.

A few more things I’d love recommendations on:
  • best month for Milky Way visibility in India
  • whether binoculars help for beginners
  • how cold night observation gets in Ladakh
  • ideal duration for a stargazing-focused trip
  • whether observatory stays are better than regular hotels
  • beginner astrophotography settings for dark skies
  • whether phones can capture stars properly now
  • best apps for identifying constellations
  • whether altitude affects telescope viewing quality

Would genuinely appreciate honest experiences from anyone who has done astronomy-focused travel in India before, especially if you’ve compared Ladakh with Uttarakhand observatory experiences.
