Where Do You Get Horse Licking Salt Blocks?
#1
Question
I’ve recently gotten into horse care and I’m learning more and more about how important proper nutrition is—not just from hay and feed, but from supplements and minerals too. One thing that keeps coming up is the horse licking salt block, which I hadn’t paid much attention to at first. After doing some reading and asking around, it turns out these salt blocks are actually essential for a horse’s overall health. They help replace lost electrolytes, especially in hot weather or during heavy work, and supply key minerals that might be missing from their regular diet.
There seem to be a few different options out there, with Himalayan salt blocks being one of the most recommended. I’ve seen claims that they’re more natural, contain over 80 trace minerals, and last longer than the standard mineral blocks. I like the idea of something more natural, and I’ve heard some horses really prefer the taste. On the other hand, some horse owners swear by regular mineral blocks that are fortified with specific nutrients depending on the horse’s individual needs.
For those of you who’ve been in the game longer—do you have a preference? Are Himalayan salt blocks worth the slightly higher price tag, or do you find regular mineral blocks work just as well? I’m also curious where you typically buy them. Online seems convenient, but I’m wondering if local feed stores or equine supply shops offer better deals or trusted brands. I’d love to hear your experiences and any tips for making the block last longer or how to encourage a horse that doesn’t seem interested in it.
