What Should I Look for in a Shopify Development Partner for Custom Store Features?
#1
Hi everyone,

I’m currently scaling my Shopify store and need guidance on selecting the right Shopify development partner or company. My focus is on building out custom features—specifically subscription logic, a more flexible checkout process, and integrations with third-party logistics providers.

From a technical standpoint, a strong Shopify development team in 2025 should demonstrate deep familiarity with modern tooling like Shopify CLI, Hydrogen, and Storefront API. These are now essential for building performant, customized, and scalable storefronts. Experience with Liquid templating alone isn’t enough—look for developers skilled in React (especially for Hydrogen-based headless setups), GraphQL for Storefront API, and a working understanding of Shopify Functions for customizing backend logic. Teams should also follow best practices in version control, CI/CD, theme performance optimization, and app modularity. Headless commerce is increasingly relevant, so their ability to handle frontend/backend separation and microservices should factor into your evaluation process.
Additionally, are there red flags I should watch out for during the vetting process?

For instance, how do you evaluate a partner’s proficiency in Liquid, React (for headless builds), or their understanding of Shopify’s limitations around checkout customization?

If anyone has hired Shopify experts recently—especially for complex feature builds—I’d really appreciate hearing what worked (or didn’t). Also open to tips on writing a better RFP or evaluating technical proposals.
Thanks in advance!
