Hey growers! I’ve been running indoor cannabis setups for a few years now, but this season I decided to try something new and move my grow outdoors. It’s a totally different experience, and I’m quickly learning that outdoor plants grow much larger and can be a bit harder to manage—especially when it comes to wind and plant support.
In doing some research, I’ve noticed that a lot of outdoor growers swear by trellis netting cannabis setups. From what I understand, the netting helps control the plant’s shape, provides better light distribution, and most importantly, supports the branches once they start getting heavy with buds. That all sounds great—but I’m wondering how well it really performs outside.
I live in an area with fairly strong wind gusts and occasional heavy rain, so I’m curious how durable the netting is when exposed to the elements. Does it hold up all season long, or should I be looking for something stronger or reinforced? Do most of you build a frame for the netting, or do you anchor it to poles or fencing?
Also, timing is a big question for me. My plants are currently in late veg, and I’m trying to decide whether to install the trellis netting now or wait until they begin the flowering stretch. I’d love to know what’s worked best for other outdoor growers—does installing it too early limit growth or flexibility?
Another thing I’ve been debating is the size of the netting squares. Some growers say 3.5” spacing helps with tighter control and more training points, while others prefer the 6” squares for easier plant access. If you’ve used both, I’d love to know what you recommend for a large outdoor setup.
Finally, are there any particular types of material you trust more than others for trellis netting? I’ve seen some use stretchy elastic nets while others prefer the more rigid plastic or nylon types. I’m looking for something reusable but also gentle on stems.
If anyone has tips, examples, or photos of your setup, I’d really appreciate it. Just trying to get the most out of this outdoor run and avoid preventable issues. Thanks in advance, and happy growing!
