Thunderbird Freezes When Importing MBOX – Any Solutions?
#1
Hi all,

Every time I try to import my MBOX file into Thunderbird, the program completely freezes. I can’t even close it without using Task Manager! I’ve tried different MBOX files, creating a fresh profile, and reinstalling Thunderbird, but nothing works. Sometimes, Thunderbird becomes unresponsive as soon as I select the MBOX file for import.

I suspect this could be due to the MBOX file size, but I’m not sure if Thunderbird has an official limit. I also tried using ImportExportTools NG, but the import process either crashes or gets stuck at 0%. I even waited for hours, but nothing changed. Disabling add-ons, running Thunderbird in safe mode, and even increasing system memory usage didn’t help.

After struggling for hours, I finally found a reliable solution. I used SysTools Thunderbird Import Wizard, which imported my emails quickly without Thunderbird freezing. The tool supports large MBOX files and ensures that emails, attachments, and folder structures remain intact. If you're facing the same problem, this software makes it easy to import MBOX to Thunderbird without any hassle.
Has anyone else found a fix for this Thunderbird freezing issue? Could there be a problem with the MBOX file format itself? Looking for suggestions!

Key Features of the solution found:
  • Easily add multiple MBOX files at once without manual effort.
  • No file size limitations, making it ideal for importing large MBOX files without Thunderbird freezing or lagging.
  • Ensures that all email properties, metadata, and attachments remain intact after import.
  • Eliminates dependency on third-party add-ons, allowing direct and seamless MBOX import.
  • Allows you to choose specific MBOX files or folders instead of importing everything.
  • Works with the latest and older Thunderbird versions without any compatibility issues.
  • Designed for both beginners and advanced users, making the import process straightforward.
  • Keeps your email folders organized as they were in the MBOX file.
  • Optimized for quick MBOX import without Thunderbird crashes or freezes.

It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with importing MBOX files into Thunderbird. You’re correct that the size of the MBOX file could be part of the problem. Thunderbird doesn’t have an official MBOX file size limit, but it can struggle with very large files, especially if the system resources or memory aren’t sufficient to handle them.

Another possibility is that the MBOX file itself could be corrupted or have some formatting issues, which might cause Thunderbird to freeze or crash. Even though you're using ImportExportTools NG, sometimes the tool may not be able to process large or corrupted files properly, leading to it getting stuck.

Here are a few things you could try:

Break down the MBOX file: If your MBOX file is large, try splitting it into smaller files and import them separately. This can prevent Thunderbird from freezing.

Check for corruption: Try opening the MBOX file in another email client or viewer to ensure it's not corrupted.

Update Thunderbird and Add-ons: Make sure that both Thunderbird and the ImportExportTools NG add-on are updated to the latest versions.

If the issue persists and you still can't import the MBOX file successfully, I recommend using a dedicated tool like Advik MBOX Converter. This software can convert MBOX files into other formats that Thunderbird can easily handle, such as PST or EML. It’s a reliable and user-friendly option to help you import MBOX file to Thunderbird without encountering freezing or crashes.
