Hey guys, I’ve been stressing out lately. I’m working on my statement of purpose for a grad school application, and I’m really worried it’s not good enough. I’ve spent hours writing and rewriting it, but every time I read it, it feels like something’s missing. I know how important this document is – it’s like the first impression the admissions committee gets of me, and I don’t want to mess it up.
Funny thing is, I had a similar issue when I was applying for my undergrad program. Back then, I just winged it and didn’t really pay much attention to editing. Needless to say, my personal statement wasn’t great, but I was lucky to get in. I don’t want to take that chance this time around, especially with how competitive grad school can be. I’ve been thinking of getting professional help with editing, but I’m not sure where to start or how to choose a service that I can trust.
I’ve heard there are plenty of online editing services out there, but I’m hesitant because I don’t know which ones are legit and actually improve your writing instead of just fixing grammar mistakes. I guess what I’m asking is, does anyone have any suggestions or personal experiences with an editing service that’s really worth the money? I’m not just looking for someone to proofread – I want real feedback on structure, tone, and content. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!
Also, what do you think about getting feedback from a professor or advisor? I considered asking someone from my old department, but I don’t know if they’d be able to give me the kind of detailed feedback I need. Plus, they’re busy, and I don’t want to come off as asking for too much. Would love to hear your thoughts on balancing feedback from pros vs. people you know!
