Should I take practice tests for TOEFL if I’m preparing for multiple exams?

Yes, practice tests are absolutely crucial when it comes to mastering the TOEFL exam pattern, especially because this test includes unique integrated tasks that require you to combine reading, listening, and writing or speaking skills all within strict time limits. Many students are initially surprised by how different the TOEFL feels compared to other exams, which is why simulated practice is essential. As both an IELTS and TOEFL tutor, I always emphasize the importance of building familiarity with the exam’s structure, question types, and timing through frequent mock tests. What makes my approach slightly different is that I also encourage students to step outside TOEFL-only materials and, whenever possible, combine their TOEFL practice with a PTE reading mock test. This might sound unusual at first, but the logic is simple: the PTE reading section places strong emphasis on quick comprehension, vocabulary recognition, and accuracy under time pressure. When students practice with PTE reading tasks in addition to TOEFL practice, they not only sharpen their comprehension skills but also develop flexibility in handling various question styles. This cross-training effect strengthens their overall reading ability, which directly benefits the TOEFL Reading section and indirectly supports performance in integrated tasks where reading comprehension plays a key role. In my experience, this blended approach not only boosts confidence but also makes students more adaptable, better prepared, and ultimately more successful across multiple English proficiency exams they may need for study or immigration purposes.
