I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this before because I'm completely stuck. A few days ago, Outlook started behaving strangely. It would freeze while loading emails, take forever to switch folders, and occasionally crash without any warning. Like most troubleshooting guides recommend, I tried launching Outlook in Safe Mode to disable add-ins and identify the problem.
The issue is that Outlook Fails to Open in Safe Mode as well. Instead of opening, it either hangs on the loading screen or closes immediately after I click it. I thought an add-in was causing the issue, but Safe Mode should have bypassed that. Since then, I've spent hours trying different fixes.
I created a new Outlook profile, repaired Microsoft Office using both Quick Repair and Online Repair, reset the navigation pane using the outlook.exe /resetnavpane command, and even disabled antivirus software temporarily. Unfortunately, nothing worked. Every time I try to start Outlook, I get the same result. At this point, Outlook failed to launch in safe mode and normal mode, making me think the problem is related to the mailbox data itself.
After searching through Microsoft forums and community discussions, I noticed many users mentioning PST corruption as a common reason for startup failures. My PST file is quite large because I've been using the same mailbox for several years. It contains thousands of emails, attachments, calendars, and contacts. If the file became damaged, that could explain why Outlook refuses to start regardless of the mode.
Since I couldn't access my emails anymore, I decided to test the DRS Softech PST Recovery Tool. The software scanned the damaged PST file and displayed recoverable mailbox items before saving them. What impressed me was that it recovered emails, contacts, attachments, notes, and calendar entries while maintaining the original folder structure. After exporting the repaired PST and attaching it to Outlook, the application finally started working again.
What surprised me most was how difficult it was to identify the root cause. Most troubleshooting guides focus on add-ins or Office installation problems, but in my case, the PST file was the actual issue. Had I continued reinstalling Office repeatedly, I probably would have wasted even more time without solving anything.
For anyone facing a situation where Outlook Fails to Open in Safe Mode, don't ignore the possibility of PST corruption. Check your Outlook data files early in the troubleshooting process. It could save you hours of frustration and help prevent data loss.
Has anyone else experienced Outlook refusing to open in both normal mode and Safe Mode? What ended up fixing it for you?
