I understand the situation very well, because large lecture halls almost always suffer from the same set of acoustic issues. The main problem is that when the room has hard surfaces, like concrete walls, glass windows, and high ceilings, the sound waves have nothing to absorb them. They bounce around, overlapping with the speaker’s voice, and this creates that constant echo or hum that makes speech sound muddy. Even with microphones and speakers, the problem doesn’t go away, because you’re just amplifying the reflections instead of fixing them. Without any amplification, the people at the back of the hall can barely catch half of the words, and even those at the front notice that phrases seem to blend together. It’s exhausting both for the speaker and for the audience.
The good news is that you don’t need to completely renovate the hall to make speech intelligible again. While carpets and curtains can help a little by softening some of the reflections, they only deal with a small part of the frequency range. Carpets mostly absorb high frequencies, but they leave mid and low frequencies bouncing around the space. Curtains can help with windows, but they don’t solve the larger issue of walls and ceilings reflecting sound. This is why relying only on those methods is never enough for big halls.
