Unfortunately, ProtonMail does not support direct MBOX file import through its web interface. However, you can import MBOX files to ProtonMail using the ProtonMail Import-Export App, available for ProtonMail Bridge users (mainly for paid plans).
Method: Using ProtonMail Import-Export App (Paid Users)
Steps:
Install the ProtonMail Import-Export App
Download from: ProtonMail Import-Export Tool
Sign in using your ProtonMail credentials.
Choose “Import”
Select Import from the options.
Load Your MBOX File
Click “Import from MBOX.”
Browse and select your MBOX file from your computer.
Choose the Destination Folder
Pick the ProtonMail folder where you want the emails to go.
Start the Import Process
Click Import, and the tool will begin uploading your MBOX data to your ProtonMail account.
Alternative Method (Manual – Workaround for Free Users)
If you’re using a free ProtonMail account, you can try this workaround:
Import MBOX into Thunderbird
Use Mozilla Thunderbird + ImportExportTools NG add-on.
Import the MBOX file into Thunderbird.
Set up ProtonMail with ProtonMail Bridge
ProtonMail Bridge creates an IMAP connection for email clients like Thunderbird.
Configure ProtonMail in Thunderbird using Bridge.
Drag & Drop Emails
Simply drag emails from the imported MBOX folders to your ProtonMail folders in Thunderbird.
Need a Direct & Simplified Tool?
If you want an easier approach without complex setup, you can use a third-party utility like Advik MBOX Converter:
Convert MBOX to EML or other formats supported by email clients.
Then sync the emails into ProtonMail using supported tools like Bridge or Thunderbird.
Note: ProtonMail’s strict privacy model does not allow direct MBOX import unless using official tools like the Import-Export App or via ProtonMail Bridge.
