If you’re already familiar with IELTS, covering the TOEFL syllabus may take anywhere between 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how consistent and focused your preparation is. The TOEFL test shares similarities with IELTS in assessing reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills, but the TOEFL syllabus also includes unique integrated tasks that require you to combine information from reading passages and listening excerpts before responding. This means that simply relying on general English fluency isn’t enough—you must build the ability to synthesize and organize information quickly under timed conditions. As both an IELTS and TOEFL tutor, I often find that students who have IELTS experience adapt faster to TOEFL, but they still need targeted practice to master these integrated question types. For example, in the writing section, students must write an essay that compares a lecture and a reading passage, which is very different from IELTS Writing Task 2. To help with this, I incorporate tools like a PTE writing mock test into my training. Although it belongs to a different exam, the structured essay practice it provides strengthens overall academic writing skills, which directly benefits TOEFL preparation. By focusing on outlining ideas, improving coherence, and practicing under timed conditions, students can accelerate their readiness for both exams’ writing sections. With consistent practice, mock test reviews, and a clear understanding of the TOEFL syllabus, it’s absolutely possible to prepare efficiently and build confidence before test day.
