How can I manage time in the TOEFL Reading section?

Time Management in TOEFL Reading: How to Practice Effectively
Time management is a key challenge in the TOEFL Reading practice test. Depending on the test format, you’ll face either 3 or 4 academic reading passages, with 10 questions each. You’ll get 54 minutes for 3 passages or 72 minutes for 4 passages. This means, on average, you have around 18 minutes per passage—including reading and answering questions. Without good time management skills, it’s easy to run out of time or rush through answers.
One of the best ways to build time management skills is by regularly taking TOEFL reading practice tests under timed conditions. These practice tests not only familiarize you with the types of questions asked—such as factual information, vocabulary in context, inference, or sentence insertion—but also train you to pace yourself efficiently.
When I work with students, I always emphasize the importance of identifying the easier and more direct questions first. By solving those quickly, you can save valuable time for trickier inference or summary questions. Skimming the passage effectively is another important strategy. You don’t need to read every word in detail; instead, focus on understanding the structure, main ideas, and how the passage is organized.
Another tip is to avoid overthinking. Some students waste precious minutes by rereading entire paragraphs multiple times. Instead, practice scanning for keywords and narrowing your focus to the sentence or phrase that answers the question. With regular practice and strategy, managing your time during the TOEFL Reading section becomes much easier—and can help boost your overall reading score significantly.
