How can I manage time effectively during the IELTS Reading section?
#1
Time management in IELTS Reading is one of the most common challenges students face, especially since the section requires answering 40 questions across three long passages in just 60 minutes.

The key is not only reading quickly but also reading smartly. Developing the skill of skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific details can save a lot of time, particularly when locating information like dates, names, or even small but important words such as a plural noun that changes the meaning of an answer. Many students lose marks because they overlook such details while rushing through the test.

This is where practice plays an essential role. Regularly attempting an IELTS mock test under timed conditions helps you adapt to the pressure, understand how much time to spend on each passage, and recognize the types of questions that require closer attention.

As an IELTS tutor, I design mock test practice sessions that mimic the real exam environment, giving my students a clear idea of where they need to adjust their pacing. For example, I train them to spend less time on easier questions like matching headings and save extra minutes for more demanding ones, such as True/False/Not Given or sentence completion.

Over time, this builds both speed and accuracy. By analyzing their performance after each IELTS mock test, I provide feedback on strategies to answer faster, avoid common traps, and maintain focus throughout the entire reading section. With consistent practice, students not only improve their timing but also develop the confidence to approach the IELTS Reading test more strategically.
