How are files stored differently in each channel type?

Standard channels store files in the main SharePoint site associated with the team, with each channel corresponding to a folder. Private channels, however, create their own dedicated SharePoint site to ensure that only approved members have access to those files. Shared channels also generate a separate site because their membership can be different from the parent team. This setup ensures that file permissions always match channel membership.
