Do Hair Bundles Shed? What to Expect
#1
It is the question every hair enthusiast asks before clicking "buy": do hair bundles shed? The short answer is that almost all hair extensions will lose a few strands here and there, much like the hair growing from your own scalp. However, there is a massive difference between the natural, minimal shedding of a high-quality product and the frustrating, clump-heavy shedding of a poorly constructed one. Understanding what is normal and what is a red flag can save you both money and a headache.
When you first receive your bundles, you might notice a few loose hairs immediately after taking them out of the packaging. This is usually just "residual" hair left over from the manufacturing process and isn't a cause for alarm. Real concern should only arise if the hair continues to shed excessively after the initial co-wash and installation.

One of the biggest culprits of shedding is the way the wefts are handled. If you or your professional stylist have cut the weft tracks to fit a custom shape for your head and you did not seal the edges of the wefts with a product made for sealing wefts, the track itself has broken down and will allow the hair to slip out easily. Many professionals have recommended that you seal your bundle ends with a professional-grade weft sealer in order to maintain the thickness and volume of your bundle. Additionally, avoid sewing the needle directly through the track; instead, sew around it to keep the "architecture" of the extension intact.

Daily habits also play a huge role. Using high heat daily or using heavy, alcohol-based products can make the hair brittle, causing it to snap off near the base. To prevent this, treat your extensions like silk. Use a heat protectant, brush from the bottom up with a paddle brush, and always sleep with a satin bonnet. While you should expect a few stray hairs in your brush—just as you would with your natural hair—following these steps ensures that your extensions stay full, lush, and beautiful for the duration of your install. Proper care turns a temporary look into a long-lasting investment.
