Hey all,
I’m fairly new to the world of multi-pet households and just recently adopted a cat to join my older dog. I thought it would be a fun challenge, but managing the care of a Cat and Dog at the same time is definitely more complex than I imagined.
They have totally different temperaments, different eating habits, and they handle stress in completely opposite ways. I’ve been trying to create a routine that works for both without overwhelming myself—or them. I stumbled upon a really helpful article that breaks down the basics of vet care for both cats and dogs, and it gave me a good starting point to rethink how I schedule checkups and daily care.
What stood out most to me was the emphasis on early signs of illness and preventive care. My dog is easygoing and vocal, so I usually know when something’s up. But the cat? Super quiet and subtle—I almost missed a minor infection recently because she hid it so well.
I’ve started keeping separate care logs for each pet, which helps, but I still feel like I’m playing catch-up half the time. So I wanted to ask—how do you all handle things like routine vet care, grooming, diet management, or even emotional wellbeing when you’re caring for both a cat and dog?
Do you have a shared routine, or do you treat them totally separately? What’s worked for you and what hasn’t?
