Boarding process southwest airlines
#1
The boarding process for Southwest Airlines is quite different from most traditional carriers and is known for its open seating policy. Instead of assigning specific seats, Southwest assigns passengers a boarding group (A, B, or C) and a position number (1–60) when they check in. This number determines the order in which passengers board the plane. The earlier you check in—either 24 hours before your flight or earlier with EarlyBird Check-In—the better your boarding position.
Boarding begins with Group A, followed by Groups B and C. Each group is called in order and passengers line up according to their position number. Once onboard, passengers may choose any open seat. This system encourages travelers to check in early if they want to sit together or choose a preferred seat like a window or aisle.
Special boarding is also available. Families with children under six and passengers needing extra assistance are allowed to board after Group A. Additionally, Business Select customers, A-List, and A-List Preferred members enjoy priority boarding at the front of Group A.
To ensure a smooth boarding experience, it's a good idea to arrive at the gate early. Having your boarding pass ready speeds up the process and avoids last-minute stress. Southwest’s boarding system is built for efficiency and quick boarding. Knowing how it works helps you get a seat you prefer without hassle.
